From early October 2025, we’re upgrading some of our car parks to use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). This means you will no longer need to use a paper ticket, resulting in a smoother parking experience.

This will affect:

On arrival

When you arrive at an ANPR car park, you need to drive up to the entry barrier. The camera will capture your number plate and the barrier will open automatically.

You can then park as normal.

Before leaving

Before you leave the car park, you need to:

  • go to a pay station
  • enter your number plate
  • pay the parking fee displayed on the machine, by card or contactless payment

Once you have paid, you can then drive up to the barrier and it will lift automatically, once it has recognised your number plate.

Getting help

If you have any problems at the barrier or pay station, you can press the help button and a member of staff will assist you.

If you are a Blue Badge holder, you can park for up to three hours for free.

The barrier should open automatically as you drive up to enter, and you can park as normal.

When you are leaving the car park, you need to drive up to the barrier and scan the barcode on the back of your Blue Badge.

If you have parked for less than three hours, the barrier should open automatically. If you have parked for more than three hours, you will need to pay the balance at the barrier first.

If you used a paper ticket, you will need to scan it at the barrier to validate your parking, or pay if you stayed for more than three hours. The barrier will then open as normal.

You will no longer need to display a physical permit in your windscreen.

The barrier will recognise your registered number plate on entry and exit, and you do not need to use the pay machines.

If the camera doesn't recognise your number plate and the barrier does not open to let you enter, you need to press the button for a paper ticket.

You will need to scan this ticket at the payment machine, so it can calculate your fee.

Once you have paid, the machine will validate your ticket. You can then scan it at the barrier to exit.

If you have any problems at the barrier or pay station, you can press the help button and a member of staff will assist you.
