Council Tax discounts, exemptions and disregards

When we work out how much Council Tax you need to pay, there are certain discounts, disregards and exemptions we may be able to apply. These could reduce your bill or even mean you do not need to pay at all.

When we look at the number of adults living in your property, certain adults do not count. We call these adults disregarded people. These disregards may mean that a household is eligible for a discount.

We can also exempt some properties from the charge entirely.

Some discounts apply for a limited time, while others are unlimited, as long as the person or property continues to meet the criteria. 

Common discounts, discounts and disregards

Single person discount You can apply for single person discount of 25% if you are the only adult living in your property, or cancel if you no longer live alone.
Students We will disregard you for Council Tax if you are a student who meets certain criteria.
Empty properties and second homes Find out about empty properties and second homes and how they affect your Council Tax bill
People permanently living in a care home or in an NHS hospital If you live in a care home or if you are in hospital permanently, we can disregard you for Council Tax or exempt your property if it is empty.
People who are severely mentally impaired If you are severely mentally impaired, we can disregard you for Council Tax or exempt your property if it is empty.

Other discounts, disregards and exemptions

Annexes If you live in an annexe, we may be able to exempt your dwelling from Council Tax, if it meets the right criteria.
