Council Tax exemptions for people permanently living in a care home or in an NHS hospital
When we work out how much Council Tax you need to pay, there are certain disregards and exemptions we may be able to apply. These could reduce your bill or even mean you do not need to pay at all.
When we look at the number of adults living in your property, certain adults do not count. We call these adults disregarded people. These disregards may mean that a household is eligible for a discount.
We can also exempt some properties from the charge entirely.
We will disregard you if you are liable for Council Tax, and you:
move out of your home to live permanently in a care home, or
are in hospital to receive long-term care and you are unable to go back your usual home address
If the house is unoccupied, we will apply a Council Tax exemption to the property. The exemption applies whether the property is left furnished or unfurnished.
The exemption will end if:
anyone moves into the property, or
the person living in residential care is no longer liable for Council tax (if their property is sold or their tenancy ends)
To apply for this disregard/exemption, you will need to provide:
your name
your date of birth
the name and address of the care home or hospital
the date you started living there
You can to apply to claim this disregard/exemption.
