Chelmsford City Council

We are part of the Essex Community Shield, which brings volunteers together with the people most in need of help due to coronavirus. You can find out how to get help, or how to volunteer. You can also view our latest coronavirus updates.

Benefits

If your income has been affected by coronavirus and you need help with your rent or paying your council tax, we want to provide you with some information to help you at this difficult and uncertain time. You can read all more on our coronavirus updates page.

If you (or your partner) are of working age, you may not be able to make a new claim for Housing Benefit. Instead, you will need to apply for Universal Credit to help pay your rent. You can find out whether you need to claim Housing Benefit or Universal Credit.

If you are applying for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction at the same time, you only need to fill in the application form once.

We can only discuss your benefit claim with you, or with someone who has authority to discuss.
