e-scooter trial
We are taking part in an e-scooter hire trial with Essex County Council.
Our aim is to provide a socially-distanced and safe way for people to travel, that reduces the number of short car journeys made. Only e-scooters hired through the trial are legal.
Essex County Council prepares for next phase of e-scooter service
We will announce a new provider soon for shared e-scooter scheme in Essex.
The current contract for the provision of shared e-scooters in Essex concluded on Wednesday 13 August 2025, as Essex County Council prepares to transition to the next phase of the service.
Since launching in 2020, the scheme has supported over 3 million journeys across Braintree, Chelmsford and Colchester, helping residents travel more sustainably and providing choice.
We would like to thank Dott, the current operator (previously operating as Spin and then Tier), for its contribution over the past five years.
Removal of the e-scooters began on Monday 11 August ahead of the contract end date.
Users with active passes beyond Wednesday 13 August should contact support@ridedott.com to arrange a refund.
Unfortunately, the expiry of Dott's contract and unexpected delays in tendering a new contract means e-scooters will temporarily be unavailable for hire in Essex, including in Chelmsford.
Dott continues to operate in Milton Keynes, Nottingham and Bristol.

Privately owned scooters
All privately owned e-scooters (most of which are plain black) remain illegal to use on public roads and land, and are not insured.
Illegal e-scooters are a police matter, so you will need to call 101 to report an incident.
