People caring for a person living in their home
We will disregard you if you are providing care for at least 35 hours per week on average to another person living in your home. They must not be your spouse, civil partner, partner or child who is under 18 years old.
The person you are providing care to must also receive at least one related benefit, including:
- Attendance Allowance
- Care component of Disability Living Allowance at middle or higher rate
- an increase in the rate of disablement pension
- an increase in Constant Attendance Allowance
- Armed Forces Independence Payment
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP) at standard or enhanced rate
If you are caring for your own child and they live with you, we can only disregard you once your child is 18 years old.
If you are caring for a child that is not yours that is under 18 years old, we will disregard you. This includes:
- foster parents
- guardians
- anyone providing care to the child who is not the parent or adoptive parent of the child
To qualify as a disregarded person, you can download and complete our application form. You can also request a form to be sent to you by post.
You must send your completed copy of the form to us. This must include evidence which shows you claim at least one of the required benefits.
