Chelmsford City Council

Rent an allotment

We own 23 allotment sites in the Chelmsford area, with nearly 1,000 plots to hire.

Each allotment has its own character and sense of community, giving you the opportunity to grow your own fresh fruit and vegetables.

You can view and filter our list of allotments below, or you can view all our allotment sites on a map.

However, this is not an exhaustive list of all allotments sites in the area. Parish and town councils also run their own allotment sites.

Taking up a plot for the first time

We will contact you when a plot becomes available on your preferred site.

You can visit our Waterhouse Lane offices to collect a key to the site, so you can inspect the plot.

We normally allocate plots in the winter, from October to March. This allows you to prepare the plot in time for spring.

If an existing tenant gives up a cultivated plot, we will allocate it immediately, so it does not fall fallow.

If you decide to take the plot, you will need to:

  • pay a £50 refundable deposit within seven days
  • sign an Allotment Agreement

You can only start to cultivate the plot after we sent you a counter-signed copy of the agreement. You can have up to three keys for the site. There is a refundable charge of £10 per key.

  • Standard: £4.50 per rod
  • Concession: £2.25 per rod
  • Water: £1.90 per rod

A rod is equivalent to 25 square metres. You can rent allotments by the rod, up to a maximum of 10 rods.

The prices are an annual charge, and are valid until 31 March 2020.

You will qualify for a concession if you are:

  • over 60
  • a student
  • receiving Income Support

We will invoice you for your plot on 1 April each year. You must pay within 30 days.

We usually turn on the water supply in April, once the frosts have ended. We turn the water off again from September, depending on weather conditions.

We carry out plot inspections and maintenance checks between April and September. This allows us to check that you are cultivating your plot and to inspect the sites for any maintenance issues.

You are not allowed to have:

  • hosepipes
  • glass
  • carpets
  • bonfires
  • BBQs
  • fires
  • trees (other than dwarf stock)

on your allotment plot.

You must get permission from us to put up:

  • a shed, which must be no more than 6 foot by 4 foot and put on paving slabs
  • dwarf root stock fruit trees
  • a polytunnel or any other structure

It is your responsibility to:

  • put a permanent plot number to the front of your plot and/or shed
  • cut the pathways either side and to the rear of your plot

You can find the full terms and conditions in your Allotment Agreement.
