Disregard discounts

When we work out how much Council Tax you need to pay, we assume that there are two adults living in your home.

If you are the only adult living in your main home, you can claim a 25% single person discount.

If two or more adults are living in your home, we may still be able to reduce your bill. When we look at the number of adults living in your property, certain adults do not count. We call these adults disregarded people.

The adults that we disregard and will not count are:

Students We will disregard you for Council Tax if you are a student who meets certain criteria.

Apprentices

School and college leavers

Adults who are still eligible for Child Benefit

People who are severely mentally impaired We will disregard people who have a severe mentally impairment, if they meet certain criteria.

People permanently living in a care home or in an NHS hospital We will disregard you for Council tax if you permanently live in a care home or if you are in hospital to receive long-term care.

Carers employed by a local authority or charity

People caring for a person living in their home

People in prison or an other form of detention

Member of visiting forces

Members of international headquarters and defence organisations

Members of religious communities

People with diplomatic privilege or immunity who are not British citizens
