We are inviting comments on proposed changes to the Hackney Carriage (taxi) table of fares.

At its meeting on 9 July 2026, the Regulatory Committee agreed to publish the proposed fares for consultation in accordance with Section 65 of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976.

Hackney Carriage fares are the maximum fares that licensed taxis may charge when hired within the Chelmsford City Council area. Drivers may choose to charge less than the maximum fare.

Proposed changes

The principal proposed changes to Tariff 1 (day rate) are:

Journey: initial charge (pull off)

  • current fare: £3.60

  • proposed fare: £4.00

2 miles

  • current fare: £7.30

  • proposed fare: £8.20

3 miles

  • current fare: £10.20

  • proposed fare: £10.80

5 miles

  • current fare: £15.20

  • proposed fare: £16.00

10 miles

  • current fare: £27.60

  • proposed fare: £28.80

What happens next?

If we receive no objections during the consultation period, we will implement the revised table of fares following completion of the statutory process.

If we receive objections, we will report them to a future meeting of the Regulatory Committee for consideration before we introduce any revised fares.

We will publish the outcome of the consultation following the Committee's decision.
