About

Alfred was born in Romford and studied at the private Heatherley School of Art as well as the Camden School of Art in 1883.

By 1897, he was also an honorary major in his local voluntary regiment and during WW1 he oversaw prisoners near Chelmsford.  In his later life, he became Art Master at the Chelmsford School for Girls in 1907, after he took a position as Second Master at Chelmsford School of Art and Design, in 1905.

The main medium Alfred used was watercolour and his subjects were mainly buildings in the Essex area.

Alfred lived in Tindal Street briefly before moving to Moulsham Street, where the Quadrant premises now is.

When he moved to Cheshire in 1930, Alfred donated a large collection of his paintings to public ownership.  57 of them were gifted to Chelmsford Museum and remain there to this day.
