When you apply for any type of planning advice, you also have the option to request heritage advice as an add-on to your main request.

Heritage advice includes:

You cannot apply for standalone heritage advice.

You can apply for either written advice or a meeting with a principal heritage officer. We will combine this with the written advice or meeting with a planning officer, as part of your overall planning advice.

Written advice

If you apply for written advice, we will add the principal heritage officer's written comments into your overall written advice. You will not receive a separate written response from a principal heritage officer.

Meeting

You can ask for a principal heritage officer to attend a meeting as part of your planning advice request.

Following the meeting, we will send you written confirmation of our advice. We will combine it with the written advice or meeting with a planning officer as part of our planning advice service. You will not receive a separate written response from a principal heritage officer.

You will need to submit a request for planning advice before you request additional heritage advice.

The fee for the advice depends on the scale of the proposed development, they type of advice you would like, and whether you have had advice from us before.

Subsequent advice

You can pay a reduced fee for subsequent advice if you have: 

  • already received heritage advice about a similar development on the same site in the last three months
  • received a refusal of planning permission for a similar development on the same site in the last three months

All fees are valid until 31 March 2027.

Once you have submitted your planning advice request, you can make a payment online. You will need to choose the Preliminary Planning Enquiry Fee option. 

You must quote your reference number when making the payment. Once you have made the payment, we will add this onto your planning advice request. You cannot add on heritage advice after we have given our planning advice.
