China Generation Nuclear Power (CGN) and EDF Energy are developing proposals to build a new nuclear power station (Bradwell B) at Bradwell-on-Sea, Maldon. This will be next to the former Bradwell A nuclear power station, which was decommissioned in 2002.

CGN and EDF Energy are also proposing further related developments off-site, within Maldon and Chelmsford Council areas, which will support construction.

These include:

  • park and ride facilities for construction workers
  • freight management facilities to reduce traffic on local roads
  • local highway improvements

The planning process

A nuclear power station is a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project. This means the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy needs to approve it, through a Development Consent Order.

The Bradwell B project team held a stage 1 pre-application public consultation in 2020. You can read our response to the consultation.

They will use the responses to develop more detailed proposals, which will also be subject to further public consultation in the future.

You can find out more about the project, consultation and FAQs on the Bradwell B project website

You can also find out more about the project from the Planning Inspectorate.
