Title

The Crown, Governor and Race

Location

Rivermead Islands, next to Anglia Ruskin University

Artist

Matthew Lane Sanderson

Description

The sculpture is made of mild steel with deliberately-aged patina.

The site-specific work references the subjects of law, architecture, nursing and engineering studied by students living nearby. It also references ten-pin bowling a social activity on the site.

The central ball-bearing race references the local history of ball-bearing manufacture. The whole sculpture might appear as a large bearing itself within which a series of interdependent, man-made and natural systems interact. The ‘veins’ resemble the branches of a tree relating to the weeping willow trees nearby.

The artist was commissioned by the developer Mike Kirkham.
