Our diverse collections, new multi-sensory galleries, park and café make Chelmsford Museum a fantastic place to visit. We can provide new experiences, inspiring conversations and learning, plus having lots of fun.

Entry is free and we welcome groups to come and explore the museum and park and visit the café, which are all fully accessible.

For a more interactive visit, we can create a bespoke museum-led session for your group, tailored to your groups interests, age and ability.

We can adapt our school’s sessions or work with you to create something more specific based around our collection.  A session will combine opportunities to handle museum objects with the option to take part in a variety of practical hands-on activities

Teacher feedback

“The students were all engaged and enjoyed exploring the different items presented. Many have asked lots of questions and could remember key words such as ‘gas mask’ or ‘Anderson Shelter’.” -Thriftwood School

Planning a visit

If you are planning a visit with more than five people, you must book this in advance. You can complete a booking enquiry form. If you would like to discuss a museum-led session for your group, you can contact us.

Cost

£4 per pupil for a one hour session.

Access

There are three large disabled parking spaces in the car park and vehicle access to the front entrance if required.

The museum and café are fully accessible with a lift to the first floor and large accessible toilet.

Quiet chill out space

There is a small ‘reflective’ gallery with seating and minimal displays which provides a quiet space in the museum.

Cafe or lunch space

If you book a museum-led session and would like to stay for lunch, you can stay and use the activity room or picnic in the park in the small ‘secret garden’.

If you are making an independent visit there is no indoor lunch space available, but you are very welcome to use the café. Please let us know before your visit if you would like to visit the café.

Play areas in the park

There is plenty of space to run around in the park and two fenced play grounds and a ‘park trail’. Please be aware people are allowed to walk dogs off leads in the park but are asked to keep them under control and to clear up after them.

Preparing your group

Download a ‘Visual tour’ to allow your group to see the museum and displays before they arrive.

Make more than one visit

Visiting a new place can be quite overwhelming. Why not think about planning a couple of shorter visits to get the most from the experience?

What to expect during a visit

Thank you to the year 13 students at Thriftwood College who have made this video to show you what to expect when you visit Chelmsford Museum.
