Chelmsford Museum - closed until further notice

Chelmsford Museum closed

We’ve missed you at Chelmsford Museum. Seeing the pleasure that visitors get from our collections and the energy that you bring to our beautiful site really makes museum life worthwhile for us. So it is with great sadness that we have to tell you that we won’t be able to reopen until spring

This has been a very difficult decision for us. We are so proud of our fantastic new museum, which has worked hard to give Chelmsford the history it deserves.  It was wonderful to welcome you back in 2019 after a complete revamp with new, interactive exhibits that engage our local community like never before.

This much more interactive format has been amazing for us and our visitors. But touching objects is now prohibited under COVID-19 restrictions, and that makes it hard for us to reopen. Over the last few months, we have been looking carefully at all the options available to us. Although some museums are now starting to reopen, we want to make sure that you are safe and current guidelines make it difficult for us to offer anything but a very limited visitor experience.

If we were to reopen now, so few people would be allowed through our doors every day that it would be hard to justify reopening. A lot of our exhibits, which involve getting hands-on with history, simply wouldn’t be able to operate. That’s not the experience we want you to have at Chelmsford Museum.

So, we have decided to put our reopening on hold until we can both keep you safe and give you the experience you deserve. That doesn’t mean we aren’t still working to bring history to you! We have some exciting plans for online content in the coming months and will be showcasing some of the people, places and events that make Chelmsford the unique city that it is.

We will also use this time wisely to make huge improvements behind the scenes, and bring our museum stores and any collections not on display up to the same high standard of our main museum. Although this unexpected break is not what any of us would have wished, we will use it as an opportunity to find more ways to enlighten and entertain you when we open once again.

Oaklands Park and our permanent outdoor exhibits will stay open. The Hive café will remain open whilst restrictions allow.

Please keep in touch with us on social media, take care of yourselves, and stay curious about our local history. We look forward to making new memories with you in 2021.

We may not be open, but we're bringing the museum to you.

We've also put together some great History Hacker colouring in sheets to download:

For now, take care, and we’ll see you soon.
