Polling stations
The Returning Officer will have 98 polling stations set up in Chelmsford on 7st May, with over 300 members of staff working in them.
Polling stations will be ready to open at 7am in the morning and will close at 10pm in the evening.
Whilst you are campaigning, make sure you remind people to check where their polling station is before polling day. This can be done on their poll card, online via the democracy club’s wheredoivote website or by calling us at 01245 606 449.
The candidate and their relevant agents are allowed to visit the polling stations and help us ensure that the election is delivered fairly.
You can appoint polling agents to attend polling station for you during polling day.
You can also appoint tellers to any of our polling stations to greet voters and record who has voted. They are not allowed to be inside polling stations and cannot force voters to engage with their questions.
You can view some helpful guidance for tellers and tellers do’s and don’ts to share with your volunteers here.
Polling stations will be equipped with a poster and a handout explaining what tellers are to assist with voter queries.
If possible, we would be grateful if you could let us know where you intend to assign tellers so that we can brief our staff. This is not mandatory.
If the Presiding Officer thinks that you, or any campaigners are behaving improperly, trying to determine how people are voting, or intimidating voters they will ask you to leave.
Anyone working or campaigning around a polling station on election day should be familiar with the secrecy requirements.
It is important to ensure that we provide a good voting experience for everyone in Chelmsford. With this in mind we have taken the following measures:
- All polling stations are fully wheelchair accessible and have at least one low level polling booth
- All polling stations have seating available for voters
- All polling stations have a tactile voting device and large print ballot papers to support partially sighted electors
- All polling station staff will wear ID badges to help put voters at ease
- All polling stations will have pencil grips and voters are allowed to use their own pen/pencil if they wish
- Most polling stations have assigned disabled parking (this is not possible in some city centre venues where there are no parking facilities)
Wherever possible, the returning officer will provide other resources and support to voters upon request. Examples of these may include:
- A hearing induction loop – unfortunately, we are not able to provide these for all stations due to the cost implications but will try to arrange for the provision of these in specific polling stations
- Additional support throughout the voting process – there could be a number of reasons that voters need some additional support when casting their vote e.g. dementia, anxiety or physical impairments. If they let us know ahead of polling day then we can ensure that staff are aware and can take action when the voter states their name on arrival, minimising the risk of the voter feeling uncomfortable or embarrassed.
Voters can let us know of any additional requests by calling us on 01256 606 449 or submitting an online contact form.
