Chelmsford City Council

Chelmsford, along with the rest of England, is now in lockdown until further notice. You can find out what this means and get other useful information on our coronavirus updates page.

CCTV in Chelmsford

We work in partnership with Essex Police and other bodies to ensure that Chelmsford is a safe and secure place.

We operate more than 350 CCTV cameras across Chelmsford city centre, the car parks and our property. We also operate camera in South Woodham Ferrers, Maldon and Witham.

We monitor the CCTV cameras from our 24 hour control room, with direct links to Essex Police.

We work with CCTV operators and security officers in the high street and shopping centres, through our Townlink radio link. Townlink identifies criminal activity, with regular meetings to keep members informed.

We also work with the door staff at pubs and clubs in the city, through our Pubwatch radio link. As well operating at night, there are regular Pubwatch meetings to keep pub and club owners informed about drug and alcohol misuse.

Code of practice

When we use CCTV, we follow our  code of practice, which protects your privacy but allows us to prevent crime.

All of our CCTV operators are licensed through the Security Industry Authority, and are governed by:

  • the Surveillance Camera Commissioner
  • the Information Commissioner
  • Data Protection Act 2018
  • Security Industry Authority
