Opening Hours

Sandford Mill is not normally open to the public and does not have regular opening times.

You can view the displays at Sandford Mill on either an open day, or by contacting us to request a visit.


Sandford Mill is a science education centre. We offer fun and educational days throughout the year celebrating science, nature and industry, such as our Summer of Science. You can find out about our events here.  

From April to October we offer schools brilliant hands-on science sessions at this unique learning centre.

The site houses our large industrial collections which can be viewed on our open days or by contacting us to request a visit.

By car

Sandford Mill is located just outside Chelmer Village, and there are brown tourist signposts for you to follow.

If you are using a sat nav and you set it to the postcode, it may direct you through Sandford Mill Lane. There is no vehicle access to the museum on this road.

When you arrive at Sandford Mill, there is a free car park.

By bus

The nearest bus stop to Sandford Mill is on Chelmer Village Way, and is about a mile from the museum.

The number 47, 71, 71A, 71X and 72 buses stop at this bus stop.

You can look at First Essex to check which buses go to the museum.

By train

The nearest train station to Chelmsford Museum is Chelmsford Station.

The museum is about a 30 minute walk from the station. 

By bike

Sandford Mill is located on a cycle route from Chelmer Village.
