What amazing inventions have been made in Chelmsford? What does it take to become an inventor?

With lots of hands-on experiments and practical activities, discover the stories of two Chelmsford based inventors, Guglielmo Marconi and Colonel Crompton. What did they invent, and how have their inventions changed the world?

In this session, children will:

  • Build and experiment with simple electrical circuits.
  • Investigate simple electrical motors, generators, and electromagnets.
  • Discover how Marconi transformed the world as he sent messages without wires.
  • Train as Marconi radio operators to send Morse code messages and learn how two operators saved hundreds of lives on board the Titanic.

Stay for the day

Pick up our binoculars and a ‘picture trail sheet’ and set out to explore the whole museum and park. There is plenty to discover in the new museum displays and entry to the museum is free.

Teacher feedback

“The children were engaged throughout and enjoyed exploring electricity and Morse code for the first time. We thought it was amazing and loved seeing the children experiment on their own. It was pitched perfectly.”
