Roots Chelmsford Empire Windrush boat

This exhibition will shine a light on the lives of the Caribbean Windrush community, and those who left an indelible mark on Chelmsford.

On display there will be stories from the Caribbean community who share their family history, experiences, and the enormous impact Windrush had on the Chelmsford community.

Following the Second World War, the UK was in urgent need of repair. The Windrush came over largely from the Caribbean to undertake a variety of jobs. Ransome Hoffmann Pollard Ltd (RHP) was the biggest employer for the Caribbean community in Chelmsford, along with others including Marconi.

Whilst Windrush day is a day of celebration of the contributions made, it’s also an opportunity to reflect on the difficulties faced by the Windrush generation, past and present.

In collaboration with Roots Chelmsford.
