Windrush Day 2026
Sunday 22 June is Windrush Day across the UK — a day to celebrate the contribution Caribbean migrants and their families have made to the UK.
Over the next year in the lead up to the next Windrush Day in 2026, we are collecting stories from Chelmsford's Caribbean community. With the help of Papa D, who has shared his own family pictures taken when his grandparents had arrived in Chelmsford and started to integrate into the Chelmsford community in the early 1950s, these stories will be used to create a display in our community exhibition space next year. They will also be vital in collecting and updating what we know about our communities in Chelmsford.
Papa D has said about the project:
"It has been a longstanding ambition of mine to have representation for the Caribbean community of Chelmsford. I see it critical, that we as a community have our part to play in bringing our people together and build stronger relationships in and across communities in Chelmsford. I see no better place than the Museum of Chelmsford to demonstrate our rich history of the Windrush Generation here. I hope it will educate and celebrate the legacy of the Windrush Generation and achievements, that when people walk away, they will have a better understanding and walk away with pride."
