Conditions of sale for general admissions, events and activities 

  • Admissions purchased to enter the museum cannot be resold or refunded. Last admissions to the museum are one (1) hour before the museum closes. 
  • No concessions are available on admissions. All adults aged 18 and over must purchase an admission on the day unless they hold a membership or are attending an event with states free admission. 
  • Individual and joint membership holders will still visit the reception desk to enter the museum and show their membership card which they will receive on their first visit. 
  • Children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult. We reserve the right to refuse admission to unaccompanied children. Young people aged 16-17 are permitted to visit the museum without an adult. 
  • One adult admission ticket allows for up to free 4 children. All children will still need to be booked in at the reception desk.  
  • Carers attending with a disabled adult or child as one to one support qualify for free entry. Proof of carer status may be asked for on the day of your visit. 
  • Whilst we endeavour to keep as much as our museum open as possible, we may, at our discretion and without prior notice, have to close part or all of the site due to health and safety concerns, security, or any other situation deemed necessary.  
  • The museum is not responsible for associated costs of museum closure i.e. transport or hotel costs for example. 
  • We reserve the right to refuse entry and prohibit future entry or eject visitors if we believe they are: being physically or verbally abusive; behaving in a threatening manner; appear to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs; pose a risk to our staff, volunteers or other visitor, or failing to comply to the requests of the museum staff.  
  • We request that all belongings remain with you during your visit, and we will not be responsible for any damage or loss of personal items. 
  • Smoking or vaping are not allowed anywhere within the museum. If you wish to smoke or vape, you will need to leave the premises. You will be allowed to re-enter with your admission receipt. 
  • Eating and drinking is not allowed in the museum (excluding bottles of water). Any food or drink that is bought into the museum or purchased at The Hive will need to be consumed outside the premises (unless eating in The Hive itself). Only food or drink bought in for medical grounds or babes in arms will be allowed. 
  • Animals will not be admitted into the museum, unless they are assistance animals and clearly defined as such.  
  • Whilst we are happy for visitors to take pictures or videos related to their visits (unless otherwise stated), we ask that you do not use flash photography and the respect the space and privacy of other visitors to the museum. 
  • The following groups/organisations will be able to be admitted into the museum for free: 
    • Children aged under 18 years old (under 16s must be accompanied) 
    • Carers attending to support a disabled adult or child 
    • Members of the Museum Association (with identification) 
    • Members of the National Art Pass (with identification) 
    • Museum of Chelmsford volunteers 
    • Pre-arranged appointments with Museum of Chelmsford staff 
  • All personal data that is used in order to book events and activities is process in accordance with our Privacy Policy

Conditions of sale for events and activities 

  • All sales are final and refunds will not be issued unless an event or activity is cancelled or the museum is closed unexpectedly. 
  • Tickets can be exchanged for the same event or activity in the same run, subject to availability, up to 2 days before the date and time of the event or activity. Refunds will not be issued for cancelled tickets. 
  • Latecomers may be asked to wait until a suitable break in the event or activity. 
  • Management reserves the right to alter the programme, facilitators, or arrangements. 
  • Management reserves the right to cancel tickets which they reasonably suspect to have been booked fraudulently, and/or which exceed any advertised limits on the quantity that a person/ household can buy, and/or which they suspect to have been resold, or attempted to be resold, for financial gain. Any applicable restrictions to the quantity of tickets will be made clear at the time of booking. 
  • Concessions or special offer tickets to events and activities may be subject to change without prior notice. 

 Age restrictions for purchasing and attending 

  • All children under 18 need to be accompanied in the museum throughout the event or activity by an adult aged 18 or above. 

Tickets booked online and delivery 

  • By choosing to book online, it is your responsibility to check what type of discounted tickets and offers are available and that you have booked the correct tickets before completing your booking. 
  • No refunds will be given for incorrectly booked tickets. 
  • If you exceed the maximum number of tickets allowed, we reserve the right to cancel the extra tickets booked. No refunds will be given for these tickets or any applicable fees. 
  • E-tickets will be sent as an attachment to the email address of the account holder. You can print these tickets at home to bring along or present them on your phone/tablet device.  
  • Posting is not an option for tickets booked at the Museum of Chelmsford. Please present tickets/E-tickets at the front desk when you arrive.  

Gift vouchers 

  • Gift vouchers purchased at Chelmsford Theatre are redeemable for events and activities online at the museum. They are not currently valid for the gift shop. 
  • Gift vouchers for Chelmsford Theatre are not available to purchase from the museum online or in person. 

Discounted tickets and promotional offers 

  • Any discount priced tickets or special offer must be applied at the time of booking online. 
  • All discounts and offers are subject to availability where applicable and at the discretion of the museum team. 
  • All discounts and offers can be withdrawn at the discretion of the Museum Management without prior notice. 
  • Discounts do not apply to tickets already purchased. 
  • Discounted tickets cannot be booked in conjunction with or combined with any other reductions or offers. 
  • Offers with a ticket limit, either per ticket, customer, or transaction, can only be used once. 
  • If you exceed the maximum number of tickets allowed, we reserve the right to cancel the extra tickets booked. No refunds will be given for these tickets or any applicable fees. 
  • The promotion applies only to the event clearly stated in the offer and excludes any other offer or event. 
  • A valid voucher, promotional code or letter must be used for the offer to be valid. 
  • No cash alternative will be offered. 
  • The museum’s standard terms and conditions of purchase, sale and entry apply. 
  • Availability is on a first come, first served basis. 
  • Membership holders have no priority over other customers to access publicly available events and activities. 
  • The Museum Management reserves the right to introduce discounts and price changes without prior notice and to withdraw, amend or replace offers at any time and without prior notification. 

Lost and found 

Any personal items and property found that have been left behind at the Museum of Chelmsford will be stored by us for one month after they have been found (for items with significant value we will store them for three months).
