The Mayor of Chelmsford

The Full Council appoint the Mayor and Deputy Mayor during the Annual Council Meeting in May.

The Mayor chairs Full Council meetings in a ceremonial (and not political) role, and represents the Council by supporting local events and charities.

The Mayor of Chelmsford for 2019-20 is Councillor Bob Massey, and the Deputy Mayor is Councillor Janette Potter.

If you would like the Mayor or Deputy Mayor to attend your event, you can contact us to find out if they are available.

The Mayor does not attend political events, but can attend:

  • awareness raising promotions
  • fundraising events
  • annual general meetings
  • festivals  
  • award presentations
  • religious services
  • opening presentations for new or refurbished facilities  
  • launch events for new services or businesses

The Mayor’s charity

Each year, the Mayor selects a charity to support during their term of office. This year, the Mayor has nominated Parkinson's UK.


The Mayor’s Chaplain

The Mayor's Chaplain opens all Council meetings with prayers, and officiates at some civic events.

This year, the Mayor’s Chaplain is Reverend Carol Ball of South Woodham Ferrers.
