Tipped for an Oscar, Phoenix dons the clown makeup and takes on the DC supervillain. But unlike its predecessors, Joker strays away from the comics and introduces us to the softer, more vulnerable side to the character. Still based in Gotham City, we uncomfortably recoil as we watch loner Arthur Fleck observe and attempt to adapt to the seemingly normal people around him. Persistently ridiculed and prayed upon, he retains a smile on his face, even when chased, beaten and robbed in broad daylight. He seeks solace in the arms of his mother, who needs constant care and attention – even when it’s detrimental to his mental health. Finally, encouraged by an eruption of societal anarchy, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness...when a twisted secret about his past comes to light and pushes him over the edge, the infamous Joker is born.
