New summer season of Cinema at Chelmsford Picture House

LION

The new season of cinema at Chelmsford’s Picture House offers a wide variety of film and live production broadcasts. Summer 2017 highlights include ‘Manchester By the Sea’, the critically acclaimed Oscar winning film starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams. The story revolves around an uncle (Affleck) who returns home to Manchester by The Sea, Massachusetts to care for his nephew when his brother dies. The emotional drama is screened on Tuesday 16 May.

‘Hacksaw Ridge’ (Friday 16 June) is the remarkable biography of Desmond Doss. Set in World War II, Doss (played by Andrew Garfield) was a pacifist combat medic who refused to carry or use a firearm or weapon and became the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honour. This truly inspiring story was directed by Mel Gibson and won Oscars and Golden Globes for the direction, acting and screenplay.

‘Paterson’ stars Adam Driver and is directed by cult film maker Jim Jarmusch. Paterson is a bus driver and aspiring poet whose life is stuck in a routine. The film follows a week in Paterson’s life and is a gentle, innocent movie. The film is screened on Tuesday 13 June.

The long-awaited sequel to 1996’s iconic Trainspotting, ‘T2 Trainspotting’, was released in 2017 and revisits Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie 20 years after the first film. Once again directed by the masterful Danny Boyle with a screenplay by John Hodge based on Irvine Welsh’s book, the film is another jolt of adrenaline to the system. Catch up with the gang when the film shows on Monday 3 July.

The Chelmsford Picture House’s new season has something for everyone as Tom Johnson, Manager, Chelmsford City Theatres explains: “There’s a great range of fantastic cinema lined-up for the summer season that should appeal to a very wide audience, from screenings of theatre and ballet, to arthouse and award-winning movies”.

Adding to the line-up are live screenings of drama, opera and ballet, including four Royal Shakespeare Company productions, such as the classic ‘Antony and Cleopatra’, which is re-laid live on Monday 24 May and the full-throttle war play ‘Coriolanus’ on Wednesday 11 October. The Royal Ballet celebrates 70 years at the Royal Opera House on Wednesday 7 June with ‘The Dream/Symphonic Variations/Margruerite and Varmand’ which is a mixed programme of ballet choreographed by the Opera House’s founder Frederick Ashton live from the ROH.

Opera lovers have four live screenings to enjoy, the highlights being ‘Otello’ screened live from The Royal Opera House on Wednesday 28 June and ‘Hamlet’ live from Glyndebourne on Thursday 6 July.
