Children’s treats at The Civic Theatre and Cramphorn Studio, Chelmsford.

The Theatre is an ideal family day out in winter, and Chelmsford City Theatres has several productions that will appeal to families this February half term.

Starting the fun off will be ‘Comedy Club 4 Kids’ on Saturday 10 February at 2pm in the Cramphorn Studio. Aimed at everyone aged six and over, the club features some of the best stand-up comedians in the UK, all doing their side splitting routines, but without the rude bits! The club started in 2005 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and been building upon its success with every year and is based at The Soho Theatre, London. Previous comedians to have appeared include James Acaster, Mitch Benn and Tom Allen. The afternoon promises fun for everyone.

‘Dear Zoo’ is the stage adaptation of Rod Campbell’s best-selling children’s classic lift the flap book. The book was published in 1982 and it has sold over 8 million copies all over the world. Celebrating 35 years in 2017, Dear Zoo is the story of a child who writes to the zoo asking them to send a pet, and continues to delight each new generation of children as they lift the flaps in search of the perfect animal. The book is brought to life through child-engaging puppets, original music and lots of audience interaction that will delight everyone. Dear Zoo comes to The Civic Theatre on Tuesday 13 February at 1.30pm and 4pm, and Wednesday 14 February at 10.30am and 1.30pm.

CBeebies star Patrick Lynch will bring ‘There and Back Again – An Odyssey’ to the Cramphorn Studio on Tuesday 13 February at 4pm. Patrick will take you on a thrilling ride across the magical world of ancient Greece, via a pioneering mix of live cinema and theatre. With miniature sets, Patrick will direct the lights, camera and action of famous battles, one-eyed giants, angry Gods and much more before your eyes on a big screen. The Odyssey is the classic of classics, the mother of all stories and the ultimate source of myths and Patrick brings it all to life. Before the show, there will be a storytelling workshop starting at 2pm, where you will discover how to create a cinema-theatre show.
