Chelmsford City Council

We are part of the Essex Community Shield, which brings volunteers together with the people most in need of help due to coronavirus. You can find out how to get help, or how to volunteer. You can also view our latest coronavirus updates.

Looking after our parks

In light of the latest government advice due to the coronavirus, we have now closed all play areas, outdoor gyms toilet blocks, tennis courts and multi-use sports surfaces‎ within our parks. We have also suspended our volunteering activities. The parks themselves are still open. However, the vehicle entrances to Hylands Estate and the car park at Saltcoats Park/Compass Gardens in South Woodham Ferrers are closed until further notice. You can read more on our coronavirus page.

We are responsible for maintaining the parks and green spaces that we own.

This includes:

  • cutting the grass
  • planting and tending to flowerbeds
  • trimming hedges, bushes and trees
  • dealing with anything that's unsafe
  • emptying the bins and picking up litter
  • maintaining all park facilities (including toilets), play areas and sports equipment
  • marking out sports pitches
  • treating wasp nests
  • locking and unlocking the park gates

We also maintain:

  • the flowerbeds and plants in the city centre
  • any grassy or planted roundabouts in the Chelmsford area

Report a problem

If you notice a problem in one of our parks, or think we have missed something during our routine maintenance, you can make a report.

Other parks in the Chelmsford area

We do not own all of the parks and green spaces in the Chelmsford area. You can look at Essex County Council's Visit Parks for more information about the parks that we do not own.
