After reviewing the level of use and financial viability of the Gift Shop at the Stables Visitor Centre in Hylands Park, it has been decided that the shop will close at the end of September and the area used for other purposes, as part of the continuous development strategy of The Stables.
Instead the gift shop space will be transformed to increase the number and range of studios available for artists and designers which have already proved a success with the public. Currently the studios offer a diverse range of artwork and designs including paintings, jewellery and knitted pieces. The Stables resident artists also run exciting workshops, demonstrations and exhibitions for visitors.
The retail environment is challenging and changing at an unprecedented rate and the council believes that changing its usage is a better use of resources.
Cllr J Jeapes, Cabinet Member for Leisure Services said: “Although it is with regret that a decision has been made to close the gift shop, we are pleased that we can continue to build on the success of the other areas on the visitor centre such as the bookshop, artist studios and the café. This has the potential to add interest for our visitors and an opportunity to grow our diverse community of artists and designers.
Chelmsford City Council would like to thank all visitors for their continued support of The Stables at Hylands Park and cannot wait to welcome you to the new and improved visitor centre in the near future.”
