Chelmsford City Council

Photography competition to record 2020 for future

When you live in interesting times, capture them! The Chelmsford City Photo Competition is back for its sixth year, but with a difference.

Previously, entrants have been asked to enter in categories such as ‘Nature’ or ‘Urban’. However, this year, all categories have been scrapped and judges are simply seeking engaging, meaningful images that show our strange times.

From 1 June to the closing date on 31 August, Chelmsford residents and those in the surrounding areas, can each submit one entry. It must be a photograph which you have taken yourself within Chelmsford, but it doesn’t have to include a landmark – you can even submit photos taken in your own home.

Photos captured on any device, including smartphones, taken between 1 September 2019 to 31 August 2020 can be entered. Check full terms and conditions and enter at

Four overall winners will be chosen: one over-16, one under-16, one Instagram winner and a winner to be decided by public vote.

All the photos will be exhibited in October and an awards ceremony will be held for finalists. Photography goodies are up for grabs for the winners, including aluminium prints from Blue Sky Printing. A selection of photos which really capture the zeitgeist of 2020 will be included in a time capsule which the Mayor of Chelmsford is putting together to document the year for future generations.

Councillor Marie Goldman, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Connected Chelmsford, said, “Photography is a way to show others how we see the world, a moment or an angle that nobody but you could notice. At a time when we’re all socially distancing, it’s never been more important to share our worlds with others and remind ourselves that we’re not alone. I can’t wait to see all the different ways that residents capture the Chelmsford of 2020 and I’m sure we will have many excellent entries from diverse perspectives.”

The competition is part of Essex 2020, the county’s year of science and culture. For tips and tricks on photography and editing, follow @CityPhotoCompetition on Instagram.
