New year, new you - old news!

With the New Year fast approaching and the Christmas party season around the corner, take advantage of Chelmsford City Council's latest gym offers and shape up for Christmas ahead of the 'New Year, New You' group.

Chelmsford's wide range of fitness classes will make sure you are looking your best, and the envy of your friends, relatives and work colleagues, for the party season. 

The Council's four leisure centres at Riverside, Dovedale, South Woodham Ferrers and Chelmsford Sports & Athletics Centre offer around 200 classes every week. Courses range from those with a cardio focus to strength, dance and mind-and-body improvement. They run during the mornings, afternoons and evenings.

Chelmsford City Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure, Councillor Julia Jeapes, says, "Our leisure team has put together a mind-bending array of health and fitness classes that will appeal to all ages. At our centres you can try the latest dance-fitness craze of Bokwa or STRONG by Zumba, a HIIT inspired workout to make you sweat or relaxing yoga.

"Apart from offering a fantastic programme of classes, they also offer great value for money, especially if you have a Leisure Plus card. There really is no better time to get fit, especially before the gyms fill up in the New Year."

For those wanting to improve their cardio performance, there is a wide choice: Hit30 and GRIT push the body to its limits with bursts of routine and intervals for power, strength and agility. Les Mills BodyPump and Pump FX offer a complete body workout with barbells and weights, while Fight Club and Les Mills BodyCombat use non-combat boxing routines that will motivate muscles. For a high-intensity workout using your own body weight, try Insanity and Les Mills BodyAttack.

If you remember raving in a field off the M25 but have hung up the glowsticks, then our dance-themed classes are for you. Clubbercise is a fun series of easy-to-follow dance routines set to a soundtrack of thumping 90s club anthems. Sh'Bam has hot, simple dance moves and is an enjoyable social workout. The ever-popular Zumba is a dance-based aerobic workout fusing Latin rhythms with different dance styles including salsa, samba, tango and many others. Recently, Riverside has launched Les Mills Barre, a modern expression of classic balletic training - a 30-minute workout designed to shape and tone the muscles, build core strength and allow you to escape the everyday.

There are several classes with a focus on the mind for those looking to improve their overall wellbeing. Yoga will relax the mind and body whilst improving flexibility and posture. Dynamic Yoga is a fluid, less static form which nevertheless stills the mind and encourages mindful breathing. Hatha Yoga gives improved health, stamina and a calmer mind, or if you are looking for a tougher yoga experience, why not attend Vinyasa Yoga, which has a greater emphasis on strength and flow. Pilates is great for low-impact exercise where you will master breathing and musclework skills.
