Chelmsford City Council

Chelmsford, along with the rest of England, is now in lockdown until further notice. You can find out what this means and get other useful information on our coronavirus updates page.

£4.7 million paid to help Chelmsford businesses

Over £4.7 million has been paid in grants to local businesses by Chelmsford City Council to help with the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic since entering Tier 2 on 17 October 2020.

Many local businesspeople have been unable to work consistently since March 2020 due to the varying Covid-19 restrictions. The government has provided a number of different grant schemes (money that does not need to be paid back) to support businesses through their periods of closure and adjustment.

The City Council is administering the business grants from cash and guidance supplied by central Government for the Chelmsford area. The Council has made more than 3,935 payments to local businesses since Tier 2 restrictions began on 17 October 2020. Outstanding payments for all eligible applications are being processed as quickly as possible.

Businesses that have applied for a grant since November 2020 do not need to re-apply for any additional grants announced since, as the council will work out which grant payments each business is eligible for. Making multiple applications will slow the process down. Businesses that only applied for grants between April 2020 and September 2020, however, do need to apply for any additional grants they think they are eligible to receive. No further payments for the Business Adaptation Grant will be made from 15 February 2021. This grant is to help businesses adapt their premises and/or operations to be Covid-secure, so those that have made adaptations since 15 October 2020 or who plan to are advised to submit their application and provide proof of any quotations for work or expenditure as soon as possible.

Councillor Chris Davidson, Cabinet Member for Fairer Chelmsford, said: “We understand local businesses are experiencing a challenge like no other and are relying on the grants to keep them going. Our teams at the City Council are working flat-out to make sure businesses receive the funding they are eligible for as soon as possible, and that the most up-to-date information and advice is being given. We encourage all eligible businesses to apply for grants if they haven’t already and take up the opportunity.”

All business grant applications will be processed as quickly as possible. Businesses can stay up to date with the latest information by signing up to the Chelmsford business e-newsletter and joining closed ‘Chelmsford for Businesses’ Facebook Group which is for businesses only. These channels are updated regularly ensuring businesses have access to the latest information.
