Did you know that beneath Chelmsford there is a buried Jurassic island that was once inhabited by dinosaurs? Find out all about this and more at our fun filled family day In association with Essex Rock & Mineral Society

You will be able to handle rocks, pebbles and fossils and explore the prehistory of Essex via the geology of the county.

The geological deposits in Essex go back 100 million years, a period when there were ancient oceans, volcanoes, deserts and glaciers. The evidence of this prehistoric world lays underneath our feet.

There will be the opportunity to explore and get up close with the museum’s fossil collection and see the evidence of sharks living in the subtropical waters that were in the area 50 million years ago. The fossil collection includes examples from the Eocene, Jurassic and Pleistocene periods.
