This year's annual lecture is 'The Chelmsford Poor Law Union, its workhouse and the early days of St John's hospital' with Stephen Norris.

Stephen Norris is a retired teacher who published From A Borough To A City: A History of Chelmsford 1888 - 2012 in 2014. For the last two years he has been researching the local poor law with a view to producing a book on the subject.

Find out:

  • What was the new Chelmsford workhouse opened in 1835 like?
  • What happened to the first master of the workhouse?
  • Who were the local poor law guardians?
  • How did St John's hospital come about?

If you have a passion for local history, or want to find out more about where you were born or where you live, this is the talk for you.
