Closures at Riverside

The current phase of the works at Riverside affect different parts of the building and the facilities at different times.

You need to check through this information carefully. This will help you understand how these works will affect your current and future visits.

Centre-wide closure

The fantastic new Riverside Leisure Centre is set to open from Monday 10 June, so only a few weeks away now.

As part of the works, we need to close the centre from Sunday 2 June to Sunday 9 June inclusive.

Before we can open the new centre, we have lots to do. We need to:

  • clear and transfer equipment from the old centre
  • carry out essential staff training and safety checks
  • clean and prepare for the opening

While Riverside is closed, you can use our other three centres, which are:

Chelmsford Sport and Athletics Centre will also open at 6am on Monday to Friday of that week.

New leisure cards

Leisure Plus is changing to OurChelmsford Plus. If you are an existing Leisure Plus card holder, we will transfer you over to the new scheme automatically and keep your existing expiry date.

You can collect your new OurChelmsford Plus card from the 3 June from any of our other three centres. Or, you can collect your new card at Riverside from 8 June, but be aware that the centre won’t be operational until 10 June.

You can find more about the new scheme.

Swimming lessons

The last swimming lessons in the old building will be Saturday 1 June. There will then be a week’s break before lessons restart in the new pool from Monday 10 June. We will adjust your Direct Debit payments accordingly.

Current arrangement

You can currently park at:

As part of the works, we have now closed the Waterloo Lane 3 car park.

Parking for Monthly Members

If you are a Monthly Member, you can also use our Meadows Retail multi-storey car park (behind Iceland and only a five-minute walk away).

If you are using the multi-storey car park, you will need to use your existing pink pass. This will allow you to park for up to three hours for free. If you park for longer than three hours, we will charge you.

You can view  more details on the current parking arrangements for monthly members

If you do not have a pink pass, you need to enquire at reception.

New arrangements

After the centre reopens on 10 June, we will provide two car parks at:

  • the Riverside main car park (located next to the new centre)
  • the ice rink undercroft car park

You can access them via Victoria Road and both will be for Riverside customers only.

If you are an OurChelmsford Plus card holder, you can claim a refund for your first hour of parking. You need to claim at the Riverside main reception when paying for your leisure activity, by presenting the refund part of your car parking ticket.

After 10 June, you will no longer be able to park in the Waterloo Lane car parks when using the centre.

Monthly members

At peak times, we will reserve the undercroft car park for monthly members only, using an access barrier.

If you have a valid membership card, you can scan it to gain entry or to exit. You can only stay for up to three hours when using the centre.

You need to display a Leisure Centre parking permit in your windscreen at all times, otherwise we will issue a parking fine.

Sports Hall

The Sports Hall will remain closed for major upgrades and improvements until the new centre opens.

If you usually book the Sports Hall, we can offer you space at our other leisure centres.

Studio 1

We will also close Studio 1 and relocate it in the new part of the building.

We will be changing the timetable for classes in Studio 1, and we will move classes to Studios 2 and 3. You can check class timetables to confirm the location.

The ice rink is closed for refurbishment and will reopen following testing and commissioning when the new centre opens.

Skate School

If you are a Skate School member, your membership will automatically be put on freeze. This will guarantee you a space when the new centre opens. We will also contact you before we take any Direct Debit payments.

OJ's cafe has now closed, but we have several vending machines by reception offering hot and cold drinks and snacks.

A brand new cafe with terrace overlooking the river will be opening as part of the new Riverside. Find out more about the new development.

The brand new Riverside Leisure Centre facilities will include:
