Photo competition

Competition open 1 June to 31 August

The City Photo Competition has returned, celebrating the city of Chelmsford and its surrounding villages.

Photographers of all ages and abilities can enter to be in with the chance of winning some amazing prizes. Up for grabs are exclusive aluminium prints from Blue Sky Printing, and training with Unshaken Digital Photography Training.

The competition is open from Monday 1 June to Monday 31 August, so lots of time to submit your best snap. Photos taken between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2020 are eligible to enter too, so if you think you’ve already taken the winning photograph, you can enter below.

There are no categories this year. Instead we’re encouraging photographers to find their own inspiration within the vibrant city of Chelmsford. This could be from its natural green spaces and urban areas, or by capturing the stories of resilient residents.

There’ll be one over 16s winner and one under 16s winner, with a separate competition via the @CityPhotoCompetition’s Instagram page. If you are entering the overall competition and Instagram category, you need to ensure that your images are different. You can read the full details in our terms and conditions.

Part of Essex 2020,the competition is proud to be working with Meadows Shopping Centre, Blue Sky Printingand the Essex Chronicle.

Submitting your entry

You can enter online, and you have until midnight on Monday 31 August 2020 to submit your entry.

Photographers of all ages and abilities can use any device to capture their photos, including DSLR cameras and smart phones. The image must have been captured within Chelmsford. You can  see our map to check.

If you capture a photograph where someone is easily recognisable you must seek their consent. You can read full details in the terms and conditions.

Summer of photography

Working in partnership with  Essex 2020, the City Photo Competition aims to provide a summer of interactive photography guidance and advice sessions. You can follow @CityPhotoCompetition on  Facebook and Instagram for the latest advice.

From blog posts and articles, to infographics and pocket activities there’ll be something for everyone looking to get involved with the 2020 competition.

Awards and exhibitions

We will announce the shortlisted and winning photographs in the autumn. We will also exhibit them at city centre venues, for the whole of Chelmsford to see.

In September we’ll be contacting all those photographers who have had photos shortlisted and invite you along to an exclusive awards evening.

We will also include a selection of photos in a time capsule the Mayor of Chelmsford is putting together. The photos that really capture the zeitgeist of 2020 will help document the year for future generations.

Last year's winners

The City Photo Competition 2019 overall winner was Filming Light Trails by James Di Cicco. We displayed the shortlisted and winning photos at a special exhibition at the Meadows Shopping Centre in October.

You can also view an  online gallery of the category winners.
