Christmas Lights Switch On

Each year, we hold a day of special events to celebrate switching on the city centre Christmas lights.

This year, we will hold the event on Sunday 26 November from 2pm to 5pm. Actress and presenter Denise Van Outen will push the button at 4.45pm.

The entertainment starts on the main stage, outside Shire Hall. The festivities will end with a fireworks display around 4.45pm, near the Town Sign.

The day begins in the High Street with entertainment from Heart Radio, street entertainment and festive food and drink. Popular radio presenters Martin and Su from Heart Radio will be on stage outside Shire Hall, to showcase an array of local and professional talent. This includes performances by Jordan Marsh with his ‘Mini’ Big Band and the Big Sing community choir.

In the lead up to the finale, the amazing Spark! Drummers will wow the crowds. Their show, which starts around 4pm, combines high-impact drumming, dynamic choreography and beautiful lighting design.

The grand finale at 4.45pm will see Denise, alongside Martin and Su, switch on the lights and launch a spectacular firework display.

We will also be unveiling a new set of lights for the High Street. This will include a large scale net-like illumination. The new design will create a large, contemporary ceiling of white lights, spaced out along the High Street.
