Update

In line with lockdown, our leisure centres will be closed until further notice.

Our Skate school courses follow the British Ice Skating (formerly NISA) approved Skate UK programme

Our skating lessons run continually throughout the year and even better when you apply, you'll be able to enjoy a host of amazing benefits:

  • Free ice skating for all skate school students at any public and holiday skating session.
  • Quick, easy direct debit payments spread the cost of payments across the year.
  • Students move up at their own pace rather than having to wait until the end of a term.
  • Regular online feedback with our Course Pro home portal; log in any time to view weekly progress and achievements.

Days, times and prices

Wednesdays, 4 or 4.30pm, or 7.45pm for adults

Saturdays, 9am or 9.30am

Prices

£35 per month Direct Debit for weekly lessons.

How to register

  • Unfortunately we cannot take new Skate School members at this time, however if you are interested in registering, please complete an enquiry form and we will add you to our waiting list.
  • Currently we are only able to restart students already registered with our Skate School on grades 3, 4, 5a, 5b, 6, 7 and 8. This is true for adults or children.
  • We will update the information on this page as soon as we are able to take new Skate School members.
  • We will contact individuals in other grades about a start date for their lessons as soon as we are able to run these safely.

Essential information

Changes due to COVID-19

Due to COVID-19 we have had to implement extra precautions when using the centre:

  • Before you arrive, you can download the NHS COVID-19 app. You can open the app and scan the QR code displayed at the entrance to the centre on arrival.
  • We are operating a one-way system within the centre. Entry to the centre is via the River entrance only.
  • You should only arrive 15 minutes before your lesson and queue at the entrance. We will call you in 10 minutes before the lesson begins.
  • All adults and children (aged over the age of 11 years) must wear a face covering when inside the leisure centre, unless you have an exemption.
  • Skaters need to come dressed ready for skating (with the exception of skates on).
  • Please bring water bottles with you as there are no drinking facilities available.
  • Skaters will be directed by staff and signage to follow the one-way system to collect skates if needed, then to the skate change areas. Please ensure the skaters are aware of the 2m distancing regulations and adhere to it as much as possible.
  • Do not enter the ice pad until directed to do so.
  • After the lesson skaters should vacate the ice pad promptly and proceed to the skate change areas or skate hire. We politely request that you vacate the rink area as quickly as possible, ensuring you are no longer than 15 minutes after your lesson.
  • Please clean the skate change seat after use, with the equipment provided.
  • No spectators are allowed in the viewing area unless the child is under the age of 14 years or has a medical condition, in which case there can only be one person per skater.
  • Riverside is now a cashless centre, and we are no longer issuing refunds for using the car park. Please note that the car park is also cashless, so you will need to either download the MiPermit app, or pay by card at the machines.
  • Due to the length of time since the last lessons, please be advised that skaters should take care when entering the ice pad until they find their balance. We will also be recapping the previous grades over the first few weeks.
  • Skaters must wear long sleeves and trousers, and wear hair tied back when on the ice.
