Chelmsford City Council

Book a pest control visit

We offer chargeable pest control visits and treatment for both residential and commercial properties in the Chelmsford area.

If the pest does not appear on our list, we do not treat it.

Before you book your pest control treatment, you need to check the restrictions for treating the pest.

You also need to check the preparations, and prepare your property before we arrive.

If we can’t carry out the treatment when we arrive at your property, we will charge a call-out fee.

You can only book a pest control visit by phone.

To book a pest control treatment, you will need:

  • your name and contact details
  • the details of the property that needs treatment
  • a debit or credit card or a PayPal account to pay the correct fee

We don’t accept American Express.

If you need to cancel your booking, you should call us on 01245 606606 and ask for pest control. You can cancel at any time, but you should give us as much notice as you can. If you cancel on the day we are due to visit, we will not refund the callout fee.

How to book

The fee for treating rats is:

  • £58.40

If you claim benefits, there is no fee for treating rats.

If the treatment is at a commercial property, the fee for the initial visit is £114.10. The minimum fee for subsequent re-visits is £57.05 per re-visit. We do not treat commercial food premises.

We use a slow-acting poison (rodenticide) bait, which will kill the rat once it has eaten a lethal dose. This can take between 4 and 12 days.

We dye the bait a bright colour and keep it in a tamper-proof box, so that other animals are not poisoned by mistake.

Yes, we will visit again to collect any dead rats if they are in an easily accessible area. If an infestation requires multiple visits, the pest control officer will decide when the treatment is complete and the infestation is dealt with.

We will not charge for re-treatment if you tell us there is a recurrence within three weeks of the pest control officer closing the job.

We can only treat in the loft if it is fully boarded. If it is not, we will only be able to leave the bait trays or boxes around the loft hatch.

The fee covers up to five visits. However, if the problem persists beyond five visits (owing to continued garden bird feeding, keeping of chickens, waterfowl or other animals), then a further fee will be payable for the treatment to continue. We will not offer free re-treatment if the problem recurs within three weeks if the chickens/fowl are still being kept at the property.

If you are keeping large numbers of chicken or fowl, you will need to pay the commercial rate per visit.

Treatment time
30 to 60 minutes to lay the poison or the traps

After the treatment, we will give you advice about how to prevent rats in the future.

You may have to stop feeding birds and wildlife, or change your method of feeding.

All prices are valid from 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2020.
