Oaklands is an established award winning park. It covers approximately five hectares (12 acres) of grounds within the historic quarter of Chelmsford City. It was first opened as a public park in 1930. Today it boasts both Green Flag and Green Heritage status.
This historic park offers local residents, schools, workers and visitors:
- a museum of local and national interest
- sports pitches
- tennis courts
- innovative play areas
- a landscape in keeping with a Victorian Italianate villa and grounds
The general layout of the park has not changed greatly in the last 100 plus years. A proportion of the park’s treescape can be traced back to Victorian and Edwardian times.
Over 130,000 visitors enjoy organised events and attractions each year. Oaklands offers something for everyone whilst remaining a green oasis of relative tranquillity within walking distance of the busy City Centre.
The park includes Chelmsford and Essex Regiment museums. Entrance is free.
Access is from Moulsham Street or Vicarage Road.
