Synchronised Swimming

ASA Synchronised swimming awards at Riverside Ice and Leisure.

Please note: The Centre has waiting lists in operation for all of our courses.

Waiting list forms are available from Reception and by post. The Course Co-ordinator will notify you as soon as a place becomes available.

The course breakdown is as follows:
1. Stage 1 - basic skills

Preliminary Synchro Skills

Stage 1 - Basic Skills
These groups of skills test the pupil's ability:

  • To step into water of at least full reach depth - with the arms at the sides;
  • To perform a back layout, sculling for support and hold for 5 seconds;
  • To swim a) 10 metres on the front and b) 10 metres on the back
  • To push and glide under the water and control the breath on surfacing;
  • To show a tuck position on the back;
  • To push off on the front, roll onto the back and hold;
  • To hold a mushroom float for 5 seconds;
  • To show a smooth change from one stroke to a second stroke covering 5 metres on each stroke whilst swimming in a straight line;
  • To surface dive in good style (minimum depth 1.5 metres);
  • To swim 5 metres on the front then surface dive and perform 3 breaststrokes under the water. Control the breath on surfacing.


Stage 2
These groups of skills test the pupil's ability:
  • To perform a feet-first entry into the water of at least full-reach depth with the arms above the head in the 'Y' position;
  • To scull head first for 5 metres and then return to the starting point sculling feet first;
  • To swim 25 metres showing 3 different strokes with smooth transitions between them;
  • To perform 'bobbing' in a controlled manner for 20 seconds;
  • To make a tub position and hold it for 5 seconds;
  • To tread water for 30 seconds;
  • To star float;
  • To push and glide on the front then roll onto back and hold for 3 seconds;
  • To perform tub rotation for 360 degrees;
  • To swim 5 metres breaststroke, tuck then rock onto the back keeping the head above water then open out and scull head first for 5 metres.


Stage 3
These groups of skills test the pupil's ability:
  • To perform a head first entry into water of at least full reach depth from a standing position and upon surfacing perform egg-beater for 5 seconds;
  • To scull 10 metres head-first and return to the starting point feet first;
  • To swim 25 metres along an angled pathway, change the directions twice using at least two strokes with a smooth transition between them;
  • To sit on the pool floor for 10 seconds (maximum depth 1 metre);
  • To perform handstand and hold the vertical in a depth of 1 - 1.5 metres;
  • To perform egg beater for 20 seconds;
  • To float on the back with the legs together and the arms extended beyond the head;
  • To transfer to a tub position from a back layout then change to a tuck position and perform a back somersault;
  • To perform a marlin;
  • To perform a 20 seconds sequence showing a stroke, sculling, and something of the pupil's own choice.


  • For more advanced pupils, there are both figures and routine grades 1 to 6
  • Synchronised lessons take place at Riverside on Saturday mornings from 11am to 12 noon.
