As a holder of the Investor In People award Chelmsford Borough Council is committed to a number of major youth initiatives. Not least of these is the extensive work experience placement programme arranged through the Trident Trust, colleges, international study organizations, special needs establishments and other recognized work training and self-help groups. Each year between 30 and 50 students and work trainees are given an opportunity to gain work experience in one of the many Service environments that form a part of the Council's work. These range from learning basic office administration to learning about public relations; from town planning to developing I.T. skills; from vehicles maintenance to being involved in local government administration; from assisting in the parks' nurseries to involvement with community projects, and much more. The placements are usually on a short-term arrangement, occasionally extending beyond two weeks. Under the close supervision of qualified staff this is long enough to help most work experiencers decide on the right career path to follow.
