Housing and Council Tax Benefit

Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit (which helps people to pay their Rent and Council Tax) are means tested benefits which are administered by Chelmsford Borough Council. They can be claimed when you are both in and out of work.

These pages aim to answer your questions on the issues that surround benefits and to help you understand what they are and when they are paid. The buttons to the left will take you to in depth information on all the 'frequently asked questions'.

From 2 November 2009 Child Benefit is no longer counted as income.  If you get Child Benefit you should have received a letter to tell you that your Housing and/or Council Tax Benefit has increased.  We have also contacted people to tell them  that they may now be entitled to Housing and/or Council Tax Benefit because of this change.  If you want to make a claim go the "How to make a claim for Housing / Council Tax Benefit" website page for further information.

Below are the current LHA rates for Chelmsford Local Authority area.   If you want to see previous months LHA rates you can use the LHA Direct link on the right.  You must use the South West Area LHA rates if you live in or plan to move to the Wickford area and/or the postcode starts with SS.
