Parks and Gardens in the Borough

Parks Services manages over 1,700 acres (687 ha) of parks and green spaces within the Borough.

To help us keep your local park a pleasure to visit:

  • Please clear up after your dog (Land is protected by the Dog Fouling of Land Act, 1996)
  • Please do not camp, light fires or BBQs in any of the parks and green spaces managed by Chelmsford Borough Council.

Opening and Closing Times:

All our parks and gardens are free and open every day of the year, pedestrian park gates open at 07:30 and close at the following times:

Admirals Park is a beautiful town centre park, very popular with residents and visitors alike. The River Can meanders alongside creating areas to enjoy nature and unwind.

Andrews is a popular local park, used by local residents and schools in the area.

Baddow Hall Park is a local park popular with families and dog walkers

Built in 2001 Boleyn Gardens is an established landscaped garden which includes ponds and wild flower areas to encourage wildlife, a children's play area and award winning Elements Garden crammed full of herbacious plants.

Brook End Garden is a great community garden close to local schools and homes.

Central Park, Bell Meadow and Sky Blue Pasture offer visitors a green oasis in the hubbub of the town centre. Popular with office workers and families alike the parks have a variety of features to suit all.

A popular park with a variety of sport pitches offering year round usage, Chancellor is a popular park for the sports minded.

Home of Chelmsford's Hockey and Cricket Clubs, Chelmer Park is a vibrant park specialising in sporting activities.

Chelmer Valley Local Nature Reserve covers an area of 21.8 ha. The reserve follows the River Chelmer for approximately 1.5 miles from where Victoria Road crosses the river past Anglia Ruskin University up to Springfield Hall Park.

Coronation Park is home to Springfield Cricket Club and Chelmsford Rugby Club, a popular park specialising in sporting activities.

Popular with dog walkers, nature enthusiasts and local residents Galleywood Common offers a chance to appreciate the diverse range of habitats it supports making it one of the most significant areas of semi natural vegetation in Essex.

Hylands Estate is a beautiful example of a restored picturesque landscape originally designed by Humphry Repton (19th C).

Oaklands is an established park covering some 4.8 hectares (12 acres) of grounds within the historic quarter of Chelmsford. Within the park there are colourful Victorian planting schemes, contemporary herbaceous borders, award winning Echo Garden (dry garden), wildlife areas, Football pitches, Tennis courts, Children's play area and Chelmsford and Essex Regiment Museums (free admission).

Pollards Meadow and Springfield Green provide attractive areas of green space within a historic part of Chelmsford.

Saltcoats Park and Compass Gardens, close to South Woodham Ferrers town centre, offers a range of outdoor facilities in over 10 hectares (24 acres) of Green Space.
