The Active Chelmsford Sports Awards celebrate and recognise the very best in sport in the Borough of Chelmsford and those people who participate, support its provision and invest personally in its ongoing development. The inaugural Active Chelmsford Sports Awards were held on Tuesday 4 October 2011 and were hosted by the Mayor of Chelmsford at Chelmsford Borough Council.
The Active Chelmsford Sports Awards celebrate and recognise the very best in sport in the Borough of Chelmsford and those people who participate, support its provision and invest personally in its ongoing development. The winners and those nominees who were highly commended are as follows: Sports Personality of the Year
A performer of any age (young or old) who has made a significant impact during the year at County level or above either individually or as part of a team. Winner - Jessica Judd, Athletics Jessica is not only a fantastic sports talent but also a modest and engaging personality. A role model within Chelmsford Athletics club, she has represented her country numerous times. Highly Commended - Chris Frost, Volleyball Chris is the youngest player at the age of 17 to represent GB at national level in his sport. He is now looking to cement his place in the Olympic squad.
Sports Team or Club of the Year
A local team or club (based within the borough) that has made a significant impact during the year. This can be success in competition or by having a positive impact in the local community. Winner - Chelmsford Chieftains Ice Hockey Team A number of different squads are run within the club. Their first team regularly attract large and vocal crowds. The club supports several local charities and has led the way in their sport in supporting our armed forces. Highly Commended - Chelmsford Boccia Club Chelmsford Boccia Club is a new club and a measure of its community impact is that it was nominated by several of its club members who number 24 at the last count.
Sports Coach of the Year
A coach who holds a current recognised coaching qualification and is committed to providing the highest standard of coaching to their athletes in either team or individual sports. This person could also be someone who helps other coaches to develop. Winner - Jeremy Freeman, Athletics Jeremy supervises a group of 45 athletes at Chelmsford Athletics Club. The athletes range from 11 to 45 years old. This season has seen two of these attain GB honours and yet still says he is learning. Highly Commended - Dean Birrell, Ice Hockey Dean has not only been successful seeing the Chelmsford Chieftains Ice Hockey Team take the pay offs having just missed out on the league title, but has also built the side from local talent in a sport that is truly international.
Unsung Hero
A volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to local sport. This could be a coach, official, committee member or anyone else who it's felt deserves recognition for their dedication to their sport. Winner - Dawn Barnard, Women's Football Dawn has many years of service to her sport, as player, coach, administrator and champion; and has already been recognised by her national governing body, the FA for her contribution to grass roots women's and girls football. Highly Commended - Paddy O'Riordan A true back room hero who is at the heart of all that goes on at Springfield Cricket club. Highly Commended - Martin Gaterell, Blue Falcons Gymnastics Display Team Martin is seen as a father figure and role model in the club and finds time to do everything from driving the team truck, to fundraising and still attends the twice a week practice sessions.
Education Establishment
Any educational establishment (school, college or university) within the borough, that gives their pupils or students a wide range of opportunities to participate in high quality physical education and extra curriculum sport. Winner - William de Ferrers Sports College The school has seen internal standards rising in exam results and as recognised by OFSTED, also offers many extra curricular activities for example visiting the Olympic site and Bath University to name just two. Highly Commended - Chelmer Valley High School Chelmer Valley High School was nominated by one of its most successful extra curricular clubs, The Blue Falcons Gymnastics Display team for the continued support they have received from the school for over 30 years.
About Active Chelmsford The 2011 Active Chelmsford Sports Awards forms part of the recognition pathway through to the Essex Sports Awards and up to Regional and National BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards. Active Chelmsford is a group consisting of organisations in the borough of Chelmsford with an interest in promoting and developing sport across Chelmsford. The agreed aims of Active Chelmsford are: - to promote and encourage the provision of opportunities for everyone to take part in physical activity and sport on a regular basis
- provide a forum to broker co-operation and co-ordination across and between members
- be an advocate for sport and physical activity locally
- be a source of advice and assistance to anyone sharing the network's objectives
- be a channel for funding and if appropriate managing and monitoring projects where these form part of the Community Plan and/or is agreed as of benefit by members
The group is strongly supported by Chelmsford Borough Council. Members of Active Chelmsford include Chelmsford Borough Council, Chelmsford College, The Chelmsford Schools Sports Partnership, Anglia Ruskin University, Writtle College and Essex County Cricket Board.
