Discover what your favourite film of all time is at The Little Big Screen Festival (Sun 14 - Sat 20 Feb). Hundreds of you voted and we have picked eleven classic all time greats, from the nominations we received. From epic drama to Disney animation, Hollywood musical to classic sci-fi, there's something for everyone! As well as a fantastic line up of some of the best loved movies ever, the festival will be introducing several guest speakers from the world of film and television as well as a special lunchtime concert with a tribute to th e music form the movies. Winners of the Chelmsford Borough Council film making competition will also get to see their efforts on the silver screen as a selection will be screened prior to some of the films. On Sunday 14 February, we will be screening two films, Shane (U) at 2.30pm, starring the diminutive Alan Ladd (so short in fact, he shot most of his scenes standing on a box) and arguably the greatest British film ever made, The Third Man (PG) at 8pm. Prior to the screening, there will be a pre-show talk by guest speaker Jill Dimmock from the Chelmsford Film Club. Jill has a PhD in Film Studies on the subject of early German cinema and currently tutors in film and television studies with the Open University. Monday evening (15 Feb) at 8pm, sees Oscar-nominated The Shawshank Redemption (15) grace the silver screen. This film proved to be the most popular amongst voters, gaining the top spot out of nearly 200 film nominations. Experience life at the Shawshank State Penitentiary with Andy Dufresne and the other inmates. The votes also rolled in for 1971 crime thriller Get Carter (18) showing on Tuesday 16 Feb, 8.00pm and starring Michael Caine. Don't miss this great British classic! Film Lecturer Jon Wisbey will be the guest speaker. Jon teaches film at the City Lit and has taught at the BFI's Southbank Centre and the Central Club, will be talking about the film and his work. Celebrate the great musical scores of cinema with a special Lunchtime Concert on Wednesday 17 February. The film-themed fun kicks off from 1.00pm with a variety of pieces played by local musicians, entry is £1. This special concert is followed by Wednesday's matinee screening of Ealing-comedy favourite The Ladykillers (U) at 2.30pm. Rounding off the day's events is Some Like It Hot (U) at 8.00pm. Don't miss the hilarious comedic timing of Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. Sci-fi fans are in for a treat! Stanley Kubrick's 2001, A Space Odyssey (15) (Thu 18 Feb, 8.00pm) is a film which can only be fully appreciated in all its cinematic glory when viewed on the big screen, so make sure you get your ticket now! The Cramphorn Theatre is delighted to welcome guest speaker, Louis Savy who is founder of the Sci-fi London Film Festival. Why not bring the family along to see West Side Story (PG) (Fri 19 Feb, 2.30pm) and join the Sharks and the Jets as they battle it out on screen. There is a also rare chance to see the visual masterpiece, Lawrence of Arabia (PG) at 8pm on Friday 19 February, too. No film festival would be complete without at least one animation thrown into the mix. You voted for your favourite Disney animation Beauty and the Beast (U) (Sat 20 Feb, 2.30pm), a perfect end of half-term treat for all the family! Harking back to the golden era of cinema, and for one week only we have brought back the screening of short films prior to the main feature. Audiences will have the opportunity to see entries to the Short Film Competition, Little Film on the Big Screen. Rounding off the week will be a special gala night on Saturday 20 February, which will include little extra treats such as talks by some very special guests and film-industry experts, not to mention of course the screening of our final film Breakfast at Tiffany's (PG) at 8.00pm. Just before the screening, at 7.30pm, there is a talk by film and TV producer/director Ben Rea. Ben won a BAFTA for his work on 'Grange Hill' and has since directed or produced over 300 Network TV Shows. He was also head of Planning at the BBC, where he was responsible for the allocation of all the finances and resources for BBC TV as well as the scheduling of programmes. The winner of the short film competition will also be screened prior to the film.
