Galleywood Common Local Nature Reserve

Popular with dog walkers, nature enthusiasts and local residents Galleywood Common offers a chance to appreciate the diverse range of habitats it supports making it one of the most significant areas of semi natural vegetation in Essex.

Welcome to Galleywood Common Local Nature Reserve

You can find Galleywood Common on the B1007 Stock Road.  The Common covers 47 hectares and was registered as Common Land under the Commons Registration Act 1965. Galleywood Common became a Local Nature Reserve in 1993.To see a map showing its location please click on the Parks and Green Spaces leaflet to the right of this page.   The Common once home to Chelmsford Race Course has areas of heathland, mire, grassland, woodland and ponds.

  • 3 car parks
  • Heathland and woodland
  • Way marked footpaths

Please note the plan is a substantial size and may take time to download. The plan includes Byelaws and a Scheme of Management as appendices to the document. Copies of the scheme can be purchased for a nominal fee from the council at the Civic Centre offices.
