Shopping, Wining & Dining

With a huge range of shops, arcades and boutiques, Chelmsford is the perfect place for some retail therapy.

Just off the pedestrianised High Street, both The Meadows and High Chelmer shopping centres are packed with well-known high street names. For something a little more individual, the boutiques and specialist stores of Moulsham Street and Baddow Road offer luxury labels, jewellery, interiors, art and gifts.

Chelmsford also has a number of retail parks within the borough including Chelmer Village Retail Park and Riverside Retail Park, where you can find outlets such as Matalan, TKMaxx, Staples, Pets at Home, Halfords, Currys and Next to name but a few.

Chelmsford originated as a market town and keeps this tradition thriving with both the indoor Retail Market off Market Square (see link on the right), and with regular markets and a Gourmet Food Fair in the High Street. Click on the links on the left to find out more.

If you're looking for the perfect gift, head to Moulsham Mill Craft & Business Centre off Parkway, offering a broad selection of gifts and handicrafts including pottery, lace, restored period furniture, American folklore items, jewellery, ethnic clothing, teddy bears and dolls houses. The new Stables Centre at Hylands features resident artists and craftsmen such as glass work, painting, silver jewellery and textiles. There is also a large gift shop and information and interpretation rooms. After all that shopping, why not relax with a cup of tea at Huttons Courtyard Cafe & Eaterie?


Wining & Dining

Chelmsford has an enormous array of places to eat and drink, from country pubs to cosmopolitan bars and cafes. The town centre also offers a vibrant nightlife, with dozens of bars and clubs to choose from.

There are over 100 places to eat in the town centre alone, offering the best of British, to cuisines from all around the world. Whether it's three-course à la carte dining at a riverside restaurant you're after, a Sunday roast and a pint at a thatched country pub or a quick snack on the hoof, there is something to suit everyone's tastes.

If you enjoy making your own delicacies, Chelmsford boasts is a huge range of local specialist food producers and suppliers. Scattered around the borough, a wide variety of farm shops and traditional butchers and bakers can be found, while closer to town, the Gourmet Food Fair offers local and national delicacies including game, olives, seafood, fruit and vegetables, patisserie, speciality sausages and hand made confectionary.
