Council Launches New Holiday Sessions for Children with Educational Disabilities

During the February half-term holiday, Chelmsford Borough Council organised new activity sessions for children with special needs. The sessions were developed in partnership with Chelmsford's New Model Special School and were held at the school's Hayward Campus on Maltese Road.

The new initiative proved extremely popular. One parent, Gill Reeve, said, "This is the best disability sports event that I have attended - it was well thought out with a good range of activities. I thought the helpers were excellent."

The sessions were aimed at children aged between 8 and 19 years old, with disabilities such as autism and downs syndrome. It gave them the opportunity to try gymnastics, ball games, boccia (a sport similar to bowls, but designed to be played by people with disabilities) and a variety of other activities. Each session had a high ratio of qualified coaches and volunteer staff to children to ensure that the children's needs were catered for.

Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Christopher Kingsley, said, "We receive many comments from parents saying there is a real need for activities and courses catering for children with special needs and disabilities. As there are limited opportunities available, people often end up travelling quite far when something suitable is put on. I am extremely pleased therefore that our sports staff are working hard to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy sports and healthy activities."

The sessions will be running again during the Easter Holidays in April for just £6 per child, per session. Full details will be available in the Council's Easter holiday brochure, which will be available from Monday 5 March.
