Public art project involves local students

A talented sculptor, Michael Condron, has been appointed to design and build a new piece of public art in Chelmsford. The art will eventually be located in an area of open space planned for a new housing development in Hobart Close, on the site of Chelmsford Borough Council's former maintenance depot.

Mr Condron is currently liaising with the local community to get their views on what form the piece of art should take. The latest stage of this consultation involved a workshop with a group of students from St. Peter's College on Friday 9 February. The object of the workshop was to explore ideas for the theme, exact location and form of the public art.  The students even made their own mock ups out of cardboard.

Michael said, "This is a really exciting project, and the workshop was very productive. I will take on board the ideas and feedback from today as I begin working up an initial design. Hopefully the consultation I have done will give the local community a sense of ownership of the artwork once it is finished."

A steering group, which includes representatives from Chelmsford Borough Council and the developers George Wimpey North Thames, will meet with the artist later in the year to agree the final design. It is hoped that the artwork will be erected on-site by Spring 2008.
