Cultural Events for 2012

Each year the Cultural Events Team devise innovative cultural events and programme, market and manage them from inception to completion. This year, Chelmsford will again be the county's centre for high-profile cultural events as the town hosts one of only 66 national Olympic Torch Relay evening celebrations.

2012 sees a change in the programme of events for Chelmsford as the town makes way for the arrival of the Olympic Flame on Friday 6th July at Hylands Park. This will be celebrated with a family-friendly spectacular 'Sparks will Fly: Essex Finale - Chelmsford welcomes the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay' This free event for 15,000 people will open with the Olympic Torch Relay evening celebration stage show and the arrival of the flame in Chelmsford. The event will close with the finale of 'Sparks will Fly in Essex' a county-wide cultural festival celebrating London 2012.

Tickets for Friday 6th July are sold out, should any returns become available, these will be allocated by ballot. Application open from 18 May to 19 June. Those interested in tickets can fill out an application form here from Friday 18 May.

If are unsuccessful in booking tickets for Friday 6th July do not worry, you can still see the Olympic Torch on Saturday 7th July at 7am, as the Olympic Torch will make a tour through Chelmsford Town Centre as it departs towards West Essex and finally reaches Cambridge that evening.

To round off the year's programme, ESSEXstreetdiversions will take place on Saturday 29th September marking the 10th anniversary of this free festival of international outdoor performance. You can expect to see your favourite performances from the past ten years alongside some special anniversary treats.

The 3foot People and The Fling festivals will be taking a well-deserved year-off in 2012. These popular events, unique to Chelmsford will return, bigger and better than ever in 2013 and will be well worth the wait.

The events programme is brought to you by the Cultural Events Team at Chelmsford Borough Council with support from The Essex Chronicle, The Meadows Chelmsford, Essex & Suffolk Water, High Chelmer Shopping Centre, The Printing Place and BBC Essex. Sparks will Fly in Essex is a partnership between Chelmsford Borough Council and Essex County Council with support from Arts Council England. The finale is part of the London 2012 Festival.
